Hundreds of kilometres from the nearest railroad sits historic train carriage C7339, in the relaxing surrounds of Platform 1 at Lightning Ridge. Platform 1 is part of your Black Opal Tours experience and is open to all visitors to Lightning Ridge.
The 'red rattler' train carriage C7339 was in service from 1929 to 1992. During those 63 years it travelled 6 million kilometres on the Sydney rail network. If you rode a train in Sydney during those years, you may well have travelled on this very carriage.
When the train carriage was decommissioned in 1992, Graeme Anderson, Lightning Ridge's resident 'Hairy Potter,' brought it to Lightning Ridge and installed it at Platform 1. Since 2008, Platform 1 has been the home of Black Opal Tours.
SO, it's all aboard at Platform 1 to view our private opal collection! Our team of experienced opalholics will share their knowledge of black opal and other opal types from Lightning Ridge. We will explain clearly what solid black opals, doublet opals and triplet opals are. You will have the opportunity to purchase a beautiful cut and polished opal from our mine, or gorgeous opal jewellery in designs exclusive to Black Opal Tours, or even a piece of rough opal we have mined ourselves.
Ask us to explain what honey opal is we can show you this golden beauty as well! And don't miss our special little display of Graeme Anderson's pottery, made using clay from the opal mines.
Whether you go on a Black Opal Tour or not, you're welcome to come and relax in the peaceful surrounds of Platform 1 and enjoy a cuppa or a cool drink, chat with the locals and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the Hairy Potter....or hear the mysterious sound of the friendly train ghost!
Platform One is located at 31 Potch Street, Lightning Ridge.
